It’s been a winding path of a career that has brought me to this point, twenty-six years since publishing my first book review.


Like many young writers, I began to write by keeping a journal. I wrote poetry as a way of experimenting with words and language.


The first articles I published were book reviews. Then came

The challenge of weaving together vast amounts of information into engaging, coherent long-form narratives gave me great pleasure and satisfaction. Writing them gave me the confidence I needed to speak in my own voice.


Speaking in that voice through commentaries and letters to the editor naturally followed.

short “front-of-the-book” pieces for magazines. Next up were the pieces I enjoyed most: feature stories.


Now I could try out different “voices” and viewpoints to convey the factual and anecdotal information I gathered in interviews and background reading.


When I finally began to write books, in the late 1990s, I knew I’d found the Holy Grail of writing.
